How to Get Fat Poor and Diseased Without Even Trying by Joshua Busch
This is a very curious book. I wouldn’t even call it a collection of short stories, because stories require setting and developed characters. This book is a collection of skits that are somewhere between jokes and mini scripts. Each episode consists of dialogue between a number of people, with no internal thoughts or plot development. I can honestly say I’ve never read a book like this before, so I can’t really compare it to anything else. I would recommend it as something for people to read when they only have a small amount of time to take something in, or just want to read something light and humorous.
Subjects covered, are a couple who have a violent introduction at a baseball game (my favourite story), people who go to view a haunted house and a bear and a lone camper. The language is very US-centric and in places I had to re-read a couple of times to grasp what the author meant. In all honesty, the book wasn’t my sort of thing, as there was nothing for me to get my teeth into, but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t appeal to someone who likes a gentle chuckle at surreal stories.
